Boudoir Blush - New For Autumn

Sorry that the posts have not been as frequent - the shop has been really busy (which is always a good thing), but it means I've been neglecting my blog.

I just wanted to update you on what's come in for Autumn/Winter. This is always my favourite season because everything becomes more sultry and sexy. You're going to be wearing more layers, so you can start wearing less practical bras and putting your nude t-shirt bra to bed.

So, what's new?....

The main image is a new Passionata range called 'Libertine'. You may have noticed that Passionata is becoming more of a name on the lingerie scene. They've plastered posters of the brand over the London underground to try and boost brand awareness. It's fun, flirty and the younger sister brand of Chantelle - the French lingerie legend.

I've really stocked up on loungewear this season. I don't know about you, but I like to feel nice when I'm slobbing around the house. The Italian brand Verdissima have come out with a range called 'You' that is wonderfully warm, soft and sexy. Using a mix of wool, cashmere and silk, and designs you can wear at home or teamed with jeans, this really is a versatile range.

Mimi Holliday has really produced some beautiful ranges this season. Introducing different bra styles into the mix, they've started catering for everyone. Pictured top is Curiosite, a peach set with sequins sewn into the cups. Beautiful. The second range pictured is Etoile De Nuit, a navy non-padded bra with wider straps and a deep plunge. Extremely elegant and teamed with a suspender, could knock the socks off any man.

All ranges are in store now and this is just a taste of what Boudoir Blush has lined up for Autumn/Winter.

New Freya - Perfect for summer prettiness.

Freya is a brand that concentrates on fit. The sister brand of Fantasie and Fauve, the attention to support is impeccable.

Freya has really evolved over the 3 years I've stocked the brand. The focus on fit did at first compromise the design and 'prettiness' of the bra, but I really think that's changed and the designs are looking fabulous this season.

They've made the colours a lot bolder and kept the ranges more fashion forward which helps to fit it with the outerwear trends for the summer.

I have just got the Freya Halle range in and it's already selling amazingly well.

Make sure you have a proper fitting before buying any underwear - something that Boudoir Blush can really help with.

Sex and the City 2 and Boudoir Blush

Boudoir Blush was lucky enough to coordinate with the Screen Winchester and deck out their foyer with some lovely lingerie for the Premier of SATC 2.

We decorated two massive white walls, 1 dedicated to Carrie and 1 dedicated the girls en masse.
The 'Carrie' wall had a large Carrie necklace, a mannequin with some Carrie-esque lingerie and some photos of the girls. We also put up a washing line and hung up some of her lingerie like she does in the series - hand washing her bras and leaving them to drip dry over her bath.

The 2nd wall had massive boards with underwear sets suited to each character.

The evening went swimmingly well and the movie was fabulous!

Boudoir Blush - what's new?

As we get closer to summer, brighter colours are making an appearance in-store.

For larger cups, we've just had the arrival of Freya Summer (right). A padded balconette that really captures the essence of the season. Don't be scared of the padding, it just offers shape and a great line under clothes.

For the smaller cups, Mimi Holliday Parfait has finally arrived and is a wonderfully vintage looking range. A little more expensive than her usual ranges, but so beautiful! (Below).

Cosabella, a wonderful Italian brand, has given us some beautiful ranges this summer. One being the gorgeous 'Thea' range: A strapless bra has never looked so good! (The straps are detachable).

Boudoir Blush gets new ranges in every month. So whatever you're looking for, for whatever occasion, we're here to help.

Swimwear - what suits you?

You've booked your holiday, you've made a list of what clothing, shoes, beauty products, hair products and suntan lotions you'll be packing (and the holiday's months away) - but you still haven't found the perfect swimwear!

Pain De Sucre is a brand from Marseilles, France. It's sexy, chic and most of all flattering. There's nothing worse than feeling self-conscious on the beach or when you get out of the pool.

As this brand is from the south of France, the cup sizing is a little limited and the cuts are a little higher on the leg and bum, but go with it. Bikinis are for getting the maximum tan, Pain De Sucre makes you look good whilst you're tanning.

My best advice for swimwear is that you'll never know what looks good on you until you try it on. You probably will see something on the hanger that you think looks awful, but put on a body looks completely different and vice verse. That goes for style and colour. So if you're going to get undressed, you might as well try everything on in your size. You'll be surprised.

Sizes range from 1 - 4 (8 - 14) and the cups are usually B/C cups, if it's underwired. Choose from swimsuits, tankinis, bikinis and cover-ups.

Underwear: Summer Basics

Your check list for essential summer basic underwear:

1) Nude moulded bras. They'll give a smooth shape under t-shirts and is the only colour to competely disappear under white.

2) Seamless underwear. Have a tight outfit and don't want a VPL? Get laser cut undies that disappear completely.

3) Nipple stickers! Brilliant for when you can't wear a bra but you don't want glass cutters. You can get really thin ones that look like fabric plasters.

4) The Magic Clip. Essential summer item - feed your bra straps through it and turn any bra into a racer-back. You can even put one in the front for those awkward tops that come in at the sides.

5) Stick on bras. This brilliant invention means you can still get the shape of a moulded bra, but without the sides, straps or back showing. Great for low back tops or dresses! A-D cup only.

Bridal Underwear: What's best?

Bridal underwear should be kept very simple. First and foremost, you want to be comfortable because the celebrations go on all day. For the actual day, you want something that makes the dress look amazing, and then for the honeymoon, you can go as impractical as you want.

The best advice I can give is thus:

1) Before you start your dress fittings, get your lingerie sorted. If you have your dress taken in and then you decide to wear a padded bra, there might not be enough fabric in the dress to let it out again.

2) If you have a strapless dress and you want shape, go for a hard moulded strapless bra. This will make sure the dress hangs well and looks stunning.

3) Strapless bras don't necessarily give a heaving bosom look, so if you want that look, don't go for a strapless dress, OR, put extra padding at the bottom of the cups.

4) Lots of people want to have nice lacy underwear that's as pretty as the dress. If the fabric of the dress is thick enough, then by all means, wear something lacy, but if the fabric is fine and delicate, you'll just see the lace and it will detract from the dress.

5) If you're wearing a close fitting dress, make sure you wear seamless, laser cut underwear that has no hems.

6) For me, comfort is key. So try and avoid wearing hugely tight control wear. It will just irritate you when you're sitting down and eating. You want to feel care-free on the day and restrictive control items will ruin that. Choose a dress that has control already built into it.

7) If you are big busted, try and choose a dress that will accommodate the underwear that you'll need to wear for support. I have had brides-to-be come in who are 32F's and are wearing backless wedding dresses. The support and the lift will just not be feasible with a stick on bra, so if you have to have this design, try and have something added into the dress.

8) Although you might hate me for saying it, nude coloured underwear is the only colour that will disappear under light coloured fabrics. If you want your underwear to be completely invisible on the day - go for that colour. You can always change into your sexy honeymoon underwear afterwards.

What is a good fitting bra?

The statistics show that 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. I would have to agree.

Why? Not because women are ignorant, although I think some women see themselves differently to what they look like, but because there are so many ill-trained bra fitters out there, that no wonder women are walking around clueless!

I have women come and see me who have been fitted in well known chain stores and department stores and their bra size is so far off the mark, that is makes me despair.

A bra should be regarded as a staple fashion item. No, not fashion item, rather a 'Female Essential'. You wouldn't compromise on the quality of your eye tests or your dental check-ups, and although I'm sure a lot of you ladies don't prioritise your bust in the same league as your general health, you really should.

Not because, if you don't, you'll become unhealthy, but because the way that you look and see your own body, really effects the female mind. I know for a fact that when women see themselves in the mirror and don't like what they see, they can get really depressed about it.

Underwear, and especially the right fitting underwear, does wonders for women. A) because it makes you look good and therefore makes you feel good, and b) if your boobs are in the right place, your clothes will hang better, giving you a better silhouette and therefore more confidence.

Your checklist for telling a good and ill fitting bra:

1) The back strap should be quite snug and sit nice and horizontal along your back. If it's arching upwards, the back is too big for you.
2) The bridge of the bra (the bit in between the cups at the front) should sit nice and flat against your chest. If it's sitting away, the cups are too small for you.
3) Women mistake 'double boob' for cleavage! Double boob is where the tops of the cups cut into your breasts creating a deep line which can be seen under clothes. Cleavage is where the bra, in the right size, creates lift, shape and contour WITHOUT the awful line.
4) When you try on a new bra, you should always start on the loosest hook. The back should feel snug and then over time the fabric will give (like denim or shoes). When this happens, you use the middle hook and then eventually the last hook. When that becomes too loose, it's time for a new bra!
5) A well worn and washed bra will need replacing in about 6 months. This is also a good time to get yourself re-fitted because, as we know, women's weight fluctuates quite frequently.

My name is Dani Miller and I own a little lingerie boutique in Winchester called Boudoir Blush - www.boudoirblush.co.uk

I am on a mission to save the UK lady from double boobs, or saggy boobs or no boobs! I dedicate my time to help ladies feel good about themselves and I hope to create a little haven, just like my shop, where I can help and answer questions about underwear, fit, styles, brands, outfit crises - anything related to underwear, swimwear, nightwear and hosiery.

My first blog is going to address the actual problem.....What's happened to people's underwear??

In the 1940's and 50's, women seemed to know how to dress. Well, women in the MGM movies knew how to dress and everything seemed to match, fit well and be made of the finest fabrics.

Now every thing's changed. Because of the recession, and even before that, women were really reluctant to spend money on underwear. Women are buying mis-matching underwear, or making do with awful briefs that look grey and shapeless.

I know that everyone has their comfy pants, period pants, gym pants....and I also know that we don't always have £50 + to spend on a set. But what I'm trying to draw attention to, nationwide,...is not necessarily the amount spent....but the self-esteem and self-respect that women seem to have lost over the years. I meet a lot of women every day and one thing I know: Women self-deprecate, pull themselves apart and have to deal with their bodies going through an absurd amount of changes throughout their life-time. I don't think I've met one person who's been happy with their mirror image. Women will be happy to spend money on things that cover up their bodies, but when they get undressed, hate what they see.

For me, underwear, boobs, how you see your body, affect the female psyche. If you don't think you look good under your clothes.....your confidence is affected. And that's just the way it is.

So - this is where underwear can help, BUT it has to fit well, which leads me on to my next blog.
